NYC mayor vows to take his first 3 paychecks in Bitcoin

Miami mayor, Francis X. Suarez, wanted to take his next paycheck in Bitcoin, so New York City’s incoming Mayor Eric Adams has upped the plan by taking his first 3 paychecks in BTC. Adams tweeted in response to Miami’s newly re-elected mayor Francis Suarez, who tweeted earlier this week that he would “take my next paycheck 100% in Bitcoin.”

The mayor replied to a tweet challenge from a popular crypto investor and podcaster Anthony Pompliano about which U.S. politician would be the first to accept their salary in the leading cryptocurrency.

In New York we always go big, so I’m going to take my first THREE paychecks in Bitcoin when I become mayor. NYC is going to be the center of the cryptocurrency industry and other fast-growing, innovative industries! Just wait!

City Coin? Adams told Bloomberg that he aims to launch a CityCoin cryptocurrency for New York City, following Miami’s footsteps with its branded MiamiCoin, which has already generated $20 million in revenue for Miami since launching in August.

Suarez tweeted to Adams “Touché, Congrats on the election and I look forward to the friendly competition in making our respective cities a crypto capital!”

While politicians are still clamouring to claim their salaries in cryptocurrencies, professional NFL athletes are already there. Russell Okung and Sean Culkin have already claimed to accept their own salaries in Bitcoin by partnering with a payments app called Strike.
