UNICEF launches NFTs to fund its Giga initiative
The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has announced the launch of a collection of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the UN agency, with proceeds going to its Giga initiative.
The Giga Initiative is a worldwide project by UNICEF and the UN's International Telecommunication Union to connect every school to the internet and every young person to information, opportunity and choice so that children can access the web-based technology and explore possibilities.
The Patchwork Kingdom collection was created in collaboration with NFT marketplace Snowcrash Labs, the Ethereum Foundation, Metagood, and others. The collection contains 1,000 NFTs, and each NFT is painted using data the initiative collected from over 282,000 schools in 21 countries to convey the importance of the program subtly.
UNICEF has been exploring web3 solutions way before they became mainstream. It has an Innovation Fund which invests in blockchain-related early-stage startups, open-source Web3 projects with the potential to impact children worldwide.
